His parents worked as school teachers. He spent his school years in a remote town called Zhenning in a mountainous area in Guizhou Province, China. At that time, the area where Huawei’s founder lived was one of the poorest areas in China.

After finishing school in 1963, Ren then continued his education at a local college called the ‘Chongqing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture’ in the city of Chongqing, China. There he majored in civil engineering.

Huawei then hired consultants from American technology companies to assist Huawei in preparing the company’s future plans. IBM from America became one of their consultants. IBM provides technology for Huawei routers and optical transmission systems. The two also collaborate in terms of research and development.
