Faculty experts weigh in on ISIS leader killed

Maher al-Agal, a leading ISIS leader, was killed by a U.S. navy drone strike in northwest Syria. In reaction to this news, William C. Banking companies and retired Vice Admiral Robert B. Murrett shared their ideas.

He writes: “If the instances are as reported – the ISIS leader killed and no civilian casualties – this strike reinforces the utility of focused drone strikes as a counterterrorism instrument. A recognized terrorist leader was removed with small or no chance to U.S. staff, and no civilians were being wounded in the procedure. Not all U.S. drone strikes are productive, but this one was.”

Murrett serves as a faculty member in the office of community administration and international affairs and serves as the deputy director of the Syracuse College Institute for Security Coverage and Law (SPL).  He retains a courtesy school appointment with the Forensic and Countrywide Safety Sciences Institute and is on the advisory board of the Institute for Veterans and Army Family members, both at the College.

He writes: “The strike on Maher al-Agal is the newest of a collection of attacks against key, senior ISIS leaders actively engaged in operations against the U.S. and our allies in the area.  The announcement was produced by U.S. Central Command, reflecting the ongoing armed service marketing campaign versus ISIS and other violent extremist companies, that keep on to gravitate toward ungoverned and semi-ruled parts such as northwest Syria.  It also underscores the will need to carry on a detailed tactic of precision strikes on this and related targets, which will reduce the scope and attain of ISIS now and in the future.” 

In 2016, Murrett was the recipient of the Birkhead-Burkhead Educating Excellence Award and Professorship at the Maxwell College, and at present serves as the principal investigator for the Intelligence Local community Center of Tutorial Excellence (IC CAE) Program.
