An eBay merchant suggests the cash depicting a Haitian migrant getting captured were being “flying off the shelf” with a single likely for roughly $500

U.S. Customs and Border Safety is investigating a collection of unofficial coins circulating eBay that function a commonly decried graphic of a Haitian migrant remaining mistreated at the U.S.-Mexico border by white patrol officers on horseback.

The phrases “You will be returned” and “Reining it in because Could 28, 1924” are inscribed on the controversial line of “challenge” coins, which commonly are personalized memorabilia applied in trade, commonly awarded in commemoration of an event or achievement, per NPR.

The images of migrants remaining whipped and corraled, which first surfaced online in September, connect with to intellect the dark times of slavery when white males on horseback oppressed and abused enslaved Black men and women on plantations.

Luis Miranda, company spokesperson for CBP, condemned the visuals and confirmed that the coin was not manufactured by the federal authority.

“The pictures depicted on this coin are offensive, insensitive, and operate counter to the core values of CBP. This is not an formal CBP coin,” said Miranda, for every CNN.

An agency spokesperson instructed NPR that the CBP Workplace of Chief Counsel (OCC) will be sending a stop-and-desist letter “to any vendor who generates unauthorized obstacle cash making use of 1 of CBP’s trademarked brands.”

An eBay reseller in Utah, who instructed NPR he obtained the cash at an auction, mentioned they were “flying off the shelf” for some time after he detailed them on the internet, with just one heading for approximately $500.

The vendor, Andy Christiansen, took down the eBay post pursuing CBP’s statements but instructed the outlet that he intends to re-listing the remaining 20 coins for sale in the long run, boasting that it is “strictly business” and that he is “uneducated on that situation” about the record of U.S. enslavement that the photos resemble.

The visuals surfaced previous September as Haitians sought shelter by the 1000’s beneath the Del Rio Global Bridge, which traverses the Rio Grande from Mexico to Texas. The mistreatment was quickly condemned by Vice President Kamala Harris and other large-rating officers in the Biden administration.

Sherrilyn Ifill of the NAACP Authorized Defense Fund explained to theGrio, “the images we observed of Border Patrol brokers on horseback menacing and corralling Black migrants like cattle raises for so quite a few of us — in particular for Black folks — the most painful, hideous pictures of slave patrols from the most hideous periods of this nation’s previous.
